I explore concepts that stem from today’s social, environmental and political concerns. Based on my past history as an architect, my artwork is expressed in an architectural language. I use painted papers as well as found materials to create sculptural reliefs. As a result, the work exhibits a feeling of imposing lightness. From a technical standpoint, I am inspired by the art of model making, whereby the work can be viewed as a staging process for larger scale projects using more industrial materials. The nucleus of each piece commences (as in nature and architecture) with minute forms, each hand cut and assembled in overlapping layers. These small forms are used as building blocks both literally and figuratively. I see my work as landscapes, evocative of an urban or natural setting, staking out a specific viewpoint. My intent is to always depict the environment as light, ephemeral and vulnerable, as if to capture a split second in a delicate, complex ecosystem that is in constant flux. The work exhibits fragility in that the minute form is responsible for supporting itself as well as its adjacent neighbors. The result is an expression of our complex ecosystem that today is inherently vulnerable.
The manipulation of the surface as well as its intricate substructure, use of color and shadow along with the application of repetitive, geometric tectonic elements, establishes a complex dialogue, magnifying the minute entity as essential in defining and sustaining a vast and complex environment.
